What to Do When the Document Title is Missing While Placing an eFiling or Physical Filing Order

Common Causes/Issues:

A specific document title or document type may not appear in the dropdown menu of the Documents tab when placing an eFiling or Physical Filing order in the Rapid Legal portal. This sometimes occurs because of differences in how each county manages its list of document titles—with titles sometimes varying from county to county.

Solution Overview:

Use this workaround to complete your order whenever the document title or document type you need for your eFiling or physical filing does not appear in the dropdown menu of the Documents tab.

When eFiling, use this process:

Step 1

Search for your document type or title in the Documents section of your order window.

As an example (see image below), let’s say Petition to Establish Parental Relationship is the document title you want. You enter the words “Petition to Establish” into the search field but no matching document type populates.

Step 1

Step 2

Before continuing with the order, check the Court’s exception list to make sure the document type you’re trying to eFile is permissible.  All counties that have eFiling available have an eFiling page. Most have the exceptions listed directly on that page or in a frequently asked questions (FAQ) section linked to the page.

For the purpose of this example, let’s assume the document Petition to Establish Parental Relationship is permissible for eFiling. Therefore, you may continue with the order.

IMPORTANT: If eFiling is not permissible for your preferred document type, simply create a new physical filing order in the Rapid Legal portal.

Step 3

To successfully file a document type not listed on the Documents tab, choose the closest-related document type.

In this case, the closest-related document type is Petition for Grandparent Visitation Filed (see below). So, it is selected.

Step 3A

Next, in the Enter Title field, rename the document title to your preferred document title and upload your document.

Step 3B

Step 4

If your preferred document type requires a Court fee, but your chosen document type does not have a fee, you will need to add an additional fee equal to that of your preferred document.

For example, if a Petition for Grandparent Visitation does not have a court fee, but a Petition to Establish Parental Relationship has a $40 court fee, you can choose another type of document with a $40 fee in the Court Fees tab.

In the example below, a Certified Copy has a $40 court fee. That fee matches the $40 fee for the Petition to Establish Parental Relationship—so it is selected.

Step 4

Step 5

In the Order Details tab, create a note for the court clerk about the missing document title, then submit your order.

Step 5

When physically filing, use this process:

Repeat steps 1-5 from above.

After you submit your physical filing order, contact Rapid Legal to request the document title be added to the list of available options.

Rapid Legal can modify and add document titles for physical filing orders at any time.
